Grand Egyptian Museum: what to know before you book

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened fully on 1 November 2025 on the Giza plateau, two kilometres from the Pyramids. It is the largest archaeological museum in the world: 500,000 m² of site, a grand staircase lined with colossal statues that climbs towards a window framing the Pyramids, twelve main galleries arranged by period and theme, and, for the first time, the complete treasure of Tutankhamun — more than 5,000 objects, including the gold mask, the three coffins, the thrones and the chariots — shown together in two dedicated galleries. The Khufu solar boat, 4,500 years old and 43 metres long, has its own building.
Three things decide the quality of your visit. First, the ticket: the museum sells only online or by card on site, foreign visitors pay about EGP 1,450 (around €28), and the ticket offices at the entrance regularly run to 30–45 minutes of queue in the morning and at the weekend; a ticket booked through our partner gives you a time slot and a QR code to scan directly at the gates. Second, the time of day: the museum opens at 9 am and the Tutankhamun galleries are quietest in the first hour and after 4 pm; on Wednesdays and Saturdays the galleries stay open until 9 pm. Third, the combination: the GEM is best paired with the Pyramids the same morning (10 minutes by car), while the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, with the royal mummies, make a second day in central Cairo.
The options sold by our partner Tiqets include the skip-the-line entry alone, the entry with a licensed Egyptologist guide (about 2 hours, the only way to understand what you are looking at), the entry with a private transfer from your hotel in Cairo or Giza (traffic in Cairo makes this the most comfortable choice), and combined tickets with the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir or the Citadel. Depending on the option, cancellation is free up to the day before.

Plan your visit to the museums of Cairo

A museum the size of an airport, a city where traffic sets the pace, and galleries everyone wants to see at the same time. These tips make the difference.

  • Book the first slot or go after 4 pm At 9 am the Tutankhamun galleries are quiet and the grand staircase empty. From 11 am to 3 pm tour groups arrive in waves. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the galleries stay open until 9 pm: a late-afternoon slot gives three calm hours and the Pyramids at sunset through the great window.
  • Allow three to four hours, five with the guide The main galleries alone cover 24,000 m². A quick visit of the staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries takes two hours; the twelve galleries and the Khufu boat need four. Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk several kilometres.
  • Pair it with the Pyramids, not with Tahrir The GEM is 10 minutes by car from the Giza plateau: Pyramids early in the morning, museum after lunch, is the ideal day. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the NMEC are 45 minutes away across the city — keep them for another day.
  • Pay by card, carry your passport The museum does not accept cash. Foreign visitors, students and children pay different prices and ID is checked at the gate; a ticket bought online with our partner spares you the queue at the ticket office but not the ID check.
  • Book the transfer if you are staying in central Cairo Taxis and Uber work well, but the drive from Tahrir or Zamalek takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and the return at closing time is the hardest. The ticket-plus-transfer options collect you from your hotel and wait for you.
  • Photos yes, flash no Personal photography is allowed throughout, including in the Tutankhamun galleries; flash, tripods and professional equipment are not. Large bags go through the scanner at the entrance and large suitcases are refused.
  • Eat and rest on site The museum has several cafés and restaurants in the atrium and a food court with a view of the Pyramids; prices are higher than in town but it saves an hour of travel. There is a children's museum and a free shuttle inside the site.

Discover the museums of Cairo

The Great Pyramid of Giza under a blue sky with scattered clouds, showing its entrance and surrounding sandy ground.

Cairo now has three great museums of ancient Egypt, each with a clear role. The Grand Egyptian Museum, on the Giza plateau, is the flagship: a building the size of a city block, twelve galleries that tell four thousand years of history from the predynastic period to the Roman era, the complete treasure of Tutankhamun, the Khufu solar boat and a conservation centre visible to visitors. It took two decades to build and replaces, for the New Kingdom and Tutankhamun, the old displays in Tahrir.

The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, opened in 1902, remains the museum of the Old and Middle Kingdoms and of the great statues: the Narmer Palette, the seated scribe, the statues of Khafre and Menkaure, the Amarna gallery with Akhenaten and Nefertiti, and tens of thousands of objects in the atmosphere of a museum from another century. It is the museum to visit if you love archaeology rather than scenography.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), in Fustat, opened in 2021 to receive the royal mummies in a spectacular procession through the city: twenty-two kings and queens, among them Ramesses II, Seti I and Hatshepsut, rest in a dim underground hall that is one of the most moving places in Egypt. Its main gallery runs from prehistory to modern Egypt. Count half a day for Tahrir and the NMEC together, a full day for the GEM with the Pyramids.

How to get to the Grand Egyptian Museum

Taxi, Uber and transfers

Alexandria Desert Road, Al Remaya Square, Giza — main gate opposite the Pyramids plateau
Uber or Careem from central Cairo: 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, about EGP 250–400
Ticket-plus-transfer options collect you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza and bring you back

Metro and bus

Metro line 3 to Giza or Cairo University, then taxi (20 minutes)
Monorail station Grand Egyptian Museum: line under test, check whether it is open on the day
Public buses stop on the desert road, not recommended with luggage

From the Pyramids

Most Giza day tours include both; a half-day Pyramids tour can drop you at the museum
No walking route between the two: the road is a motorway

From the airport and the other museums

Cairo airport: 60 to 90 minutes by taxi, airport transfers available with some tickets
Egyptian Museum (Tahrir): metro line 1 or 2 to Sadat station
NMEC (Fustat): metro line 1 to El-Malek El-Saleh, then 10 minutes on foot

Frequently asked questions about the museums of Cairo

Do I need to book Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in advance?

Strongly advised. The museum sells only online or by card at the gate, and the ticket offices run to 30–45 minutes of queue in the morning and at weekends. A ticket booked online gives you a time slot and a QR code to scan directly at the entrance. In high season (October to April) and on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, book two or three days ahead.

How much does the Grand Egyptian Museum cost?

Foreign adults pay about EGP 1,450 at the museum (around €28), children and seniors about EGP 730, with a guided tour at about EGP 1,950. Through our partner Tiqets the skip-the-line entry starts around €30–35, the guided visit around €50, the entry with private hotel transfer around €45–55, and combined tickets with the Pyramids or the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir around €50–60. Prices are set in Egyptian pounds and change with the exchange rate.

Is Tutankhamun's treasure included in the ticket?

Yes. The two Tutankhamun galleries, with the gold mask, the coffins, the thrones and the chariots, are part of the general admission. The Khufu solar boat museum, inside the site, may require a small supplement on certain tickets; the guided and combined options sold by our partner include it when stated in the description.

How long does a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum take?

Two hours for the grand staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries, three to four hours for the twelve main galleries and the Khufu boat, five hours with a guide and a break. The site is enormous: wear comfortable shoes and plan a meal on site.

What is the best time to visit?

The first hour after opening at 9 am, or the late afternoon on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the galleries stay open until 9 pm. From 11 am to 3 pm the tour groups fill the Tutankhamun galleries. October to April is the comfortable season; summer afternoons are very hot outside but the museum is air-conditioned.

Grand Egyptian Museum or Egyptian Museum in Tahrir: which one?

Both, if you have two days. The GEM has Tutankhamun, the Khufu boat and a modern scenography; Tahrir keeps the Old and Middle Kingdom masterpieces (Narmer Palette, Khafre, the Amarna gallery) in a historic building. If you have one day, choose the GEM with the Pyramids. The royal mummies are in a third museum, the NMEC.

Where are the royal mummies?

In the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat, since the Pharaohs' Golden Parade of April 2021: twenty-two kings and queens, including Ramesses II, Seti I and Hatshepsut, in a dedicated underground hall. The NMEC ticket for foreigners costs about EGP 550; the mummies hall is included or sold as a supplement depending on the period — check the ticket description.

Can I visit the Pyramids and the museum on the same day?

Yes, and it is the best plan: the museum is 10 minutes by car from the Giza plateau. Pyramids at opening (8 am) when the light is good and the heat bearable, lunch, then the museum in the afternoon. Several combined tickets and guided day tours sold by our partner include both with transport.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum suitable for children?

Yes: wide spaces, a children's museum, interactive displays and the Tutankhamun galleries that every child has heard about. Children under 6 enter free, children and students pay about half price with ID. Pushchairs are allowed; the site has lifts and ramps everywhere.

Can I take photos inside?

Personal photography without flash is allowed throughout the museum, including the Tutankhamun galleries. Tripods, flash, professional cameras and live streaming are prohibited. Large bags go through the scanner; suitcases are refused.

Can I cancel or change my ticket?

Tickets bought from the museum are non-refundable. The options sold by our partner Tiqets include, depending on the option, free cancellation up to the day before, or up to 24 hours before for guided visits and transfers; the condition is shown on each product before you pay.

Is there a dress code or anything to bring?

No dress code, but light clothing and comfortable shoes: the galleries are vast and the gardens are in full sun. Bring your passport or ID for the ticket check, a card for any purchase (no cash on site), and water, which is also sold inside.
